DESCRIPTION
With a firm brushstroke and a restrained palette of grays, leaden blues, and muted earth tones, Rafael Griera Calderón depicts an urban scene of Richmond (United Kingdom), capturing not only the architecture but also the introspective atmosphere of an ordinary day in the city. The Victorian façades and human silhouettes intertwine in a balanced composition, where the figure of the cyclist breaks the stillness with contained dynamism. Smoke rising from the chimneys reinforces the sense of cold and retreat.
Far from the luminous costumbrismo of the traditional Olot school, Griera opts for a more contemplative and realistic approach, heir to the quietude of Vermeer and the scenic sobriety of Hopper, though filtered through a distinctly Catalan and modern sensibility. The composition also recalls Antonio López García in his treatment of natural light and Edward Hopper in his perception of the urban space as an emotional stage.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Rafael Griera Calderón (Las Palmas, 1934 – Olot, 2018) was an artist deeply tied to the renewal of Catalan figurative painting. Trained at the Escola d’Art d’Olot and a founding member of the Cràter d’Art group, he moved away from the typical Olot landscape to develop a more personal and introspective body of work. Influenced by Vermeer, the Flemish school, and his contact with Anglada Camarasa, Griera focused on interiors, silent figures, and atmospheric urban scenes.
He exhibited regularly in prestigious galleries such as Comas (Barcelona), Kreisler (Madrid), and Atelier Holstein (Hamburg), and in 1983 he was admitted to the Société des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

Rafael Griera Calderón
Rafael Griera Calderón was born circumstantially in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1934. Later, he lived in Olot from 1942–60, where his father had a religious imagery workshop, he learned to perform all the techniques related to this art, and thanks to this, he developed a great artistic activity. Calderón also studied at the Escola de Belles Arts d'Olot for a short period. At the age of 12, he won his first prize at the Center Catòlic. At 18, he was part of the group Cràter d'Art, along with various artists who met regularly. Calderón was influenced by Anglada Camarassa, whom he met while doing military service in Palma de Mallorca, and by the painter Vermeer from Delft. He made trips throughout Spain to sell the saints in the workshop.
