Description of the work
A luminous view of the village of Canyelles, in the Garraf region, captured from a rising path leading to the old town. The whitewashed houses cascade down beneath a fragmented sky of bluish and mauve tones, while a rural figure —probably riding a donkey laden with baskets— introduces a touch of movement and humanity into the scene.
The work stands out for its short, impastoed, and energetic brushstroke, modeling the volumes without relying on drawing, trusting instead in the vibration of color and the structure of light. The architectural treatment, with its white planes broken by violet shadows and blue reflections, reveals a synthesis between Mediterranean post-Impressionism and French Fauvism, interpreted through a distinctly Catalan sensibility.
Here, Sanvisens achieves a masterful balance between compositional solidity and chromatic spontaneity, evoking the warmth and stillness of the mid-20th-century rural landscape.
Artist biography
Ramon Sanvisens i Marfull (Barcelona, 1917 – 1987) was one of the most representative Catalan painters of postwar post-Impressionist landscape art. He trained at the Escola de la Llotja and at the Escola Superior de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi, where he later served as professor and secretary.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1944 at the Galerías Españolas in Barcelona. In 1945, he traveled to Paris, where he studied the great masters of color —Van Gogh, Cézanne, Bonnard— an experience that decisively shaped his palette. He later expanded his studies in the Netherlands, taking inspiration from Rembrandt and Vermeer as models of light.
During the 1950s and 1960s, he developed a personal style based on formal simplification, the geometric structure of landscape, and a vibrant brushstroke combining constructive rigor with chromatic emotion. His preferred subjects included Cadaqués, Sitges, Canyelles, the Empordà, and other rural corners of inland Catalonia.
He was a tenured professor and academician of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Sant Jordi, and his works are found in both public and private collections in Spain and France.
