A winter's landscape oil painting on wood by French artist Raymond Tellier. Cool blues and greys provide the backdrop for this landscape while in the fore, a bare shrub sleeps throughout the winter at the side of a river. The artist has used thickened oils to give a textured board. The painting is signed in the lower right.

Condition: The painting is in good vintage condition, the frame also vintage, has minor imperfections.
Signed: Raymond Tellier (1897-1985). A French painter of lively scenes and typical figures, portraits, industrial landscapes, he was also a miniaturist and illuminator. An Orientalist, he studied at the Schools of Fine Arts in Douai, then in Lille. Finally, in Paris, he studied under Fernand Cormon, Emile Renard, and P. Laurens.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1920; he received a silver medal in 1921; the Théodore Rally Prize the same year; and the Bernheim de Villers Prize in 1928. He also exhibited in Douai and Lille. From 1926 to 1930, he won the Roux Prize from the Institut de France several times, for illumination, miniature painting, and painting. He then executed the extensive decorations for the BNCI (National Library of Côte d'Ivoire) in Amiens, which earned him a gold medal at the 1931 Salon and the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris, allowing him to travel for a year in North Africa, from where he brought back significant works. He won the Prix de l'Afrique Occidentale Française (Prize for French West Africa) and left immediately. He decorated the governor's palace in Dakar. In 1936, he spent time in England. He received a gold medal at the 1937 Paris International Exposition for his fresco depicting French Sudan. In 1938, he painted frescoes in the high schools of Douai. He won the Prix de l'Afrique Équatoriale Française (Prize for French Equatorial Africa) and traveled there. In 1948, he received the Gustave Courtois Portrait Prize, awarded by the Institut de France. In total, he was a nine-time laureate of the Institut de France; receiving numerous prizes and grants, he was able to travel to Tunisia, Equatorial and West Africa, and Madagascar. He received the Morocco Prize in 1953.
