Bleeding Sky is an acrylic on canvas by artist Rene Gonzalez, depicting a group of foxes huddled beneath a tree, taking refuge from a celestial downpour of shooting stars. Dimensions are 75 x 45 cm (29.6 x 17.8 in).
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the fox has emerged as a recurring figure in Gonzalez’s work. At the time, the artist had just returned to London after an administrative error on his visa kept him away for six months, separating him from his English wife. In this period of dislocation, he found a quiet kinship with London’s nocturnal foxes, solitary wanderers navigating a city that feels both familiar and foreign. In his work, the fox became a powerful symbol of resilience, adaptation, and the in-between spaces of identity and belonging.
Gonzalez sees the introduction of the fox as a pivotal moment in his artistic journey, marking a shift toward deeply personal and interconnected storytelling. “After painting that first fox, my work transformed – all my paintings became part of a larger, interconnected narrative, anchored to my personal life story, creating a sense of meaning and continuity throughout my body of work”. From that point on, every piece became an ‘episode’ in the fox’s ongoing tale, a protagonist venturing through the mysteries of a dreamlike world, carrying with him fragments of the artist’s own story.
For Rene Gonzalez, each figurative painting unfolds like a “small story”: every piece carries a narrative, born from a feeling or tale the artist seeks to express on canvas. His compositions, often imbued with a theatrical quality, draw inspiration from a wide range of sources close to him: myths and folklore from various cultures, advertising, photography, film, and art history. He selects vivid, saturated colours with intention, harnessing their emotional power and ability to create evocative atmospheres. Much of his process involves exploring and refining harmonious chromatic relationships.
With roots in both Latin American and Western traditions, Gonzalez infuses his work with personal experience, conveyed through symbolism and allegory. His life, shaped by both chosen and imposed migrations, subtly emerges in his visual language. Dialogue plays a central role in his artistic approach: he often envisions his paintings as ongoing conversations with an imagined audience. While he embeds narrative hints within his work, Gonzalez ultimately invites viewers to arrive at their own interpretations.
