Richard Aberle Florsheim was born 1916, in Chicago, Illinois. He attended the Chicago Latin School (1923–34), and the University of Chicago (1935-36), and studied in New York with Aaron Bohrod (1934–35). independent study in France, Italy, central Europe, and the Near East (1936–38). In France he met artist Emile Bernard, and spent time in his studio and visiting museums. He exhibited in France in the late 1930s with the Salon des Refusés, and the Musée du Jeu de Paume honored him by purchasing one of his paintings. He began working in lithography in 1940 and was included in a two-man show at Quest Gallery, Chicago. In 1942, Florsheim enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific theater as a cartographer and obtained patents for his radar plane-spotting technique. After the war, he resumed his artistic career, exhibiting widely. He attended the University of Chicago as a freshman, He avoided attending one of the best art schools of the time, the Art Institute of Chicago, preferring not to be affiliated with any group or art movement. His father was adamant that he pursue a university education but with the assistance of one of Richard's professors, his father was persuaded to allow his son a much desired year in Europe. By that time, Florsheim had had several small exhibitions of his work in Chicago. While in Paris and other European cities, Florsheim studied the work of the masters including José Clemente Orozco, Honoré Daumier and Käthe Kollwitz, claiming in later years that they were his only teachers. Upon his return from abroad Florsheim served as an assistant to the American painter Aaron Bohrod for a while. As Florsheim established himself in New York and his paintings became widely recognized. ACA, his major gallery, considered him to be their star. In the 1950s and 1960s, as a printmaker, he sold more graphics than any other artist represented by the AAA (Associated American Artists) Gallery. His bright expressionist paintings, images of Mexican villages and the desert, were largely influenced by a stay in Mexico and the American southwest. As a mature artist, Florsheim's paintings and graphics were concerned with refracted light in landscapes, scenes of industry and night-time cities. Among his best known images are views of the Chicago skyline at night and the bright yellow and orange flames from steel mills seen against dark backgrounds. The lyrical works reflecting his summer stays in Provincetown were also concerned with the refraction and distortion of light. Those works showed sailboats, marshes and surf set against elegant clouds and reflections on the sea. He helped found the Artists’ League of the Midwest with Artists’ Equity Association of New York, later becoming president of National Equity. In 1947–51, he exhibited at Milwaukee Art Institute and mounted two shows at Luyber Galleries, New York. He also taught at King-Smith School in Washington, DC, and Layton School of Art, Milwaukee (1949–50). Florsheim had a summer home in Provincetown, MA, and was a trustee and honorary vice president of Provincetown Art Association. In 1965 he was appointed to the Illinois State Art Council. He was also a member of the Audubon Artists and Society of American Graphic Artists. He died in 1979.

Nellie attended Oregon State in Corvallis and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a BA in Anthropology and Art. After many years as a faculty and Air Force wife and mother, Nellie resumed her full time interest in art. She studied under many notable artist-teachers, including Harding Black, Harold Roney, Dennis Olson and Kent Rush. Nellie Buel's work has been accepted in local and national juried shows. She has won numerous awards and prizes from art groups such as the San Antonio Art League and the San Antonio Watercolor Group, among others. Nellie's work is also included in permanent collections at St. Mary's University, the Healy-Murphy Learning Center, McAllen International Museum, the Hal Prince Collection (NY), Tamarind Institute Archives (Albuquerque, NM), and the McNay Art Museum Study Collection. Nellie V. Buel died in the United States in 2002. Nellie V. (Upton) Buel, born January 15, 1908, Portland, OR, died November 15, 2002. She attended Oregon State in Corvallis and graduated from University of California-Berkeley with a BA in Anthropology and Art. After many years as a faculty wife, Air Force wife and mother, Nellie resumed her full time interest in art. She studied under many notable artist-teachers, including Harding Black, Harold Roney, Dennis Olson, and Kent Rush. Although she was equally talented and proficient in all media, her interests soon specialized in graphics, in particular hand-pulled, limited editions of etchings, calligraphy, monotype, and woodblocks on handmade papers. Her work has been accepted in local and national juried shows, with awards and prizes from art groups such as San Antonio Art League, San Antonio Watercolor Group, Hill Country Arts Foundations, Texas Watercolor Society, and International Society of Experimental Artists. Nellie's work is also included in permanent collections at St. Mary's University, Healy-Murphy Learning Center, McAllen International Museum, Hal Prince Collection (NY), Tamarind Institute Archives (Albuquerque, NM) and McNay Art Museum Study Collection. After she and her husband retired to Boerne, they founded the Cibolo Studio in Comfort, Nellie's art studio and gallery, which she shared with Debbie Little-Wilson. Working in her studio, participating in shows, and sharing knowledge, techniques, and ideas with other artists, she continued to expand her artistic endeavors and creativity until very recently. She also gave of her time and talent through her teaching and critiquing other artists' works. Sadly, the contents of Cibolo Studio were heavily damaged during July, 2002 floods, causing closure of the studio after 30 years at the same location. She is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Col. (USAF) Jack Buel. She is survived by her daughter, Ellen Todd Hanks (George); son, John Thomas Buel; three grandaughters, Kathryn Buel, Elizabeth Buel, and Natalie Mund (Randy) and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of artist friends and colleagues, but most especially by Debbie Little-Wilson, Dripping Springs...

Raoul Middleman (born 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American painter. Middleman has been a member of the Maryland Institute College of Art faculty since 1961. American University Museum at the Katzen Center has described Middleman as a "Baltimore maestro [whose] nudes are not pretty—they are sagging, dimpled, and real. A beautiful wooded landscape scene with houses and trees. Painted on a masonite board. hand signed lower right. with framers label verso. Framed to 40 X 55 inches. 33 X 48 without the frame and mat. It is not dated. Lena Gurr (1897–1992), was an American woman artist who made paintings, prints, and drawings During the course of her career Gurr's compositions retained emotional content as they evolved from a naturalistic to a semi-abstract cubist style. Born into a Russian-Jewish Yiddish speaking immigrant family, she was the wife of Joseph Biel, also Russian-Jewish and an artist of similar genre and sensibility. Gurr used Lena Gurr as her professional name. After marrying Joseph Biel she was sometimes referred to as Lena Gurr Biel. Biel had been born in Grodno, Poland (later absorbed into Russia) and had lived in England, France, and Australia before coming to New York. An artist, he specialized in landscape paintings and silkscreen printing as well as photography. He studied art at the Russian Academy in Paris. After immigrating to the United States, he studied under George Grosz at the Arts Students League. Gurr was born in Brooklyn and, apart from brief stays in Manhattan and in Paris, lived there her whole life. This painting bears the influence of Lyonel Feininger an influential German American artist. Gurr began studying art at a young age. In 1919 she studied painting and printmaking at the Educational Alliance Art School and between 1920 and 1922 she won a scholarship to attend the Art Students League where she took classes with John Sloan and Maurice Sterne. In 1926 and 1928 Gurr participated in group shows at the Whitney Studio Club in Greenwich Village and in 1928 she also participated in the 12th annual exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists at the Waldorf Roof in New York. (Reviewing this show, Helen Appleton Read, the critic for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, said "I made three discoveries on my first visit, Thomas Nagel, Eugenie McEvoy and Lena Gurr with two figure compositions which have something of Marie Laurencin or Helene Perdriat quality of naive sophistication.") The Waldorf Roof was a set of rooms on the top floor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, one of which had glass sides and a glass roof. The rooms were used for concerts, dances, benefits, and exhibitions.From 1929 to 1931 Gurr took a leave of absence from her teaching position to travel in France with Joseph Biel, an artist whom she had met while studying at the Art Students League. They spent time in Nice and Mentone but mainly in Paris. During the early months of 1931, while she was still abroad, her work appeared in group exhibitions held at the R. H. Macy department store and the Opportunity Gallery (opened by Gifford Beal). Guy Cambier (1923-2008) was born in Uccle-lez-Bruxelles, Belgium in 1923. He was a painter of Genre painting, scenes, figures, portraits and still life paintings. At the age of nine years old, he lost the use of his legs caused by a tragic accident. He was self taught and studied the techniques and works of those artists he emulated, Corot and Watteau.
