Robert Buhler RA (1916–1989) was a British painter celebrated for his atmospheric landscapes and urban scenes, often distinguished by their restrained palette and contemplative tone. Born in London to Swiss parents, Buhler studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich before returning to England, where he became part of the post-war artistic milieu.
Working primarily in oils, Buhler developed a distinctive style that favoured soft edges, simplified forms, and an acute sensitivity to light and weather. His paintings frequently explore the quiet poetry of ordinary places—suburban streets, riverbanks, stretches of countryside—capturing them with a calm, introspective eye.
Buhler exhibited widely and was elected a Royal Academician in 1964, a testament to his standing within British art. His works are held in several major public collections, including the Tate, and continue to be admired for their understated beauty and atmospheric depth
