ARTIST STATEMENT
"Since I began painting more than 30 years ago, my work has evolved dramatically in terms of style and subject matter. Underlying all the changes has been a consistent desire to deal with the relationships between humans and with their relationship to the world around them. This is still my goal even though most of the current works have no human figures in them.
In the 1980’s my work was jam-packed with figures, architecture, natural forms, and the detritus of civilization. The painting was coarse and energetic - the term “expressionistic” comes to mind. I was angry about the state of the world, political corruption, and the destruction of nature.
Around the age of 40 I entered a period of confusion. My priorities, metabolism, and world-view were changing. It took me years to sort it all out. What emerged from the chaos was a different person and a different kind of painting. Outwardly the work seems simpler and calmer. The human figures are mostly gone and the materials and formats have changed.
Most of the current works could be called “landscape” or “still-life”, but to leave it at that would be missing the point. The landscapes and arrangements of objects are all invented - constructed from memories and the painting process. Synthesizing the images, rather than working from a directly observed scene, allows me the freedom to manipulate form, color, composition, light and shadow, and the other elements, to create a small parallel world that is a kind of distillation of my thoughts and experiences in this one. The world is incredibly complex and ever changing. But the world, our place in it, and our position in the universe are ultimately enigmas.
I want my work to serve as a reminder that there is a bigger, deeper, and more mysterious realm out there beyond the urban, technological world that most of us inhabit day-to-day."
