About the Item

Robert Fowler (British, active late 19th–early 20th century) River Landscape, circa 1900 Oil on canvas, signed lower right This atmospheric river landscape is a fine example of Robert Fowler’s work at the turn of the 20th century, when British painters increasingly embraced Impressionist ideas while retaining a distinctly English sense of restraint and structure. Executed in oil on canvas, the composition captures a tranquil stretch of water framed by mature trees, with distant hills and sky rendered in soft, luminous tones. Fowler’s handling of paint is confident yet understated, employing broken brushwork and a fresh, natural palette to convey shifting light and air without sacrificing clarity of form. The scene reflects the enduring British landscape tradition, filtered through the influence of French Impressionism, resulting in a work that feels both modern for its time and firmly rooted in the pastoral vision favored by British collectors. Paintings of this type were widely exhibited in regional galleries and artist-led exhibitions around 1900 and were sought after by private collectors for country houses and riverside estates, where their calm, reflective character harmonised naturally with traditional interiors. Today, works by Fowler remain appealing for their decorative balance and quiet sophistication, equally at home in a country house setting or providing a note of serenity within a more formal townhouse interior. The painting is presented in a complementary period-style frame and remains in good condition, retaining its original surface and tonality.

20th Century Oil painting of an Impressionist River Landscape of Cahors, France
By Ken Moroney
Located in Woodbury, CT
20th Century Oil painting of an Impressionist River Landscape of Cahors, France Moroney was born on the 14th of February 1949 in South London. Of Anglo Irish parentage, his father was typical of his generation and worried about Ken’s artistic temperament which he viewed as effeminate. As a result, Ken took up boxing and won a gold medal for South London in his teens. His art continued to flourish with his trademark striking use of color. His main medium oils and he favors romantic subjects of Edwardian times. Ken has traveled extensively and spent 2 years working for major galleries in New York. The Royal Academy nominated him in 1976 as being one of the few promising young artists to emerge this century: "Ken Moroney has considerable talent, any painting purchased now can only be seen as a sound long term investment." Ken Moroney's work now hangs in many important collections and has had paintings exhibited at The Royal Academy (London), and the Kline Galleries (Canada). The painting came from a private collection and previously came from Duncan Miller...
