About the Item
A wonderful impressionist-style coastal landscape with beautiful color tones throughout. Waltsak has portrayed this piece in a most intimate yet energetic way and has packed much feeling into this vibrant work. It is almost as if we are there on that warm day, bringing a beautiful feeling of nostalgia for a charming, weathered brown wooden house with a red brick chimney rising from the roof, painted in rich earthy brown tones with lively highlights and shadows that give it wonderful texture and character. The house sits close to the water's edge, with touches of green grass and foliage surrounding its base, leading down to the shoreline. Behind, stretches a beautiful expanse of bright blue water, with several sailboats gently sailing on the horizon. Robert Waltsak is known for capturing the beauty and simplicity of our times, depicting everyday life: the flower market in the morning, New York City views, villages, farms, and intimate moments shared between friends. Waltsak engages his audience with the quick use of brushwork and great attention to picking up the passionate energy of his subjects. Many of his paintings are depicted in recognizable historical settings, and this piece is an excellent example of this as he captures a warm sky with lush greenery, making a breathtaking sight. The sky in this piece is a vivid, clear cerulean blue with soft white clouds, creating a fresh, sunny summer atmosphere. The artist uses bold, visible brushstrokes typical of plein air painting, with the use of thick, expressive dabs of color that capture light and movement rather than fine detail. This painting is oil on canvas, and it is signed by the artist lower right, it comes housed in a weathered brown and green wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.

Robert Waltsak
Robert Alan "Bob" Waltsak was born in 1944 in Newark, New Jersey where he grew up. At an early age, he gravitated to the arts, studying at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts (NSFIA), The School of Visual Arts in New York, and later at the Ridgewood Art Institute with John Philip Osborne. After spending two years in the army, Waltsak returned home and got a job in an advertising agency, then he got started with woodworking because he wanted to make his own bedroom set. So after he began to work in a furniture store to learn this trade, Waltsak eventually gathered enough knowledge and skills to open up his own shop. A cabinet-making company in Wayne, New Jersey, initially worked mostly with pine furniture and followed with built-in and high-end furniture. Assisted by his son Josh, some of Waltsak's furniture work has made it to the Broadway stage in the productions of "Wicked" and "Fortune's Fool." Besides being an accomplished carpenter, Waltsak's avocation is landscape paintings, where he draws his inspiration from the works of the Hudson River School, and the palette he uses was originally developed by the late Frank Vincent Dumond. Today, Waltsak's award-winning paintings are held in numerous private and corporate collections and have been exhibited at the Hastings on Hudson Museum and at the Ridgewood Juried Art Show. As a multiple-prize winner at the Hudson River Art Association and the Ridgewood Art Institute, he has been represented by galleries in New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut and also offered art classes at his home studio in Little Falls, New Jersey.

Joseph Barrett (1936 – )
Joseph Barrett was born in Midland, North Carolina, in 1936 and studied at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Barrett, now of Lahaska, Pennsylvania, has been painting his entire adult life. His favorite subjects include the landscape surrounding New Hope and many local landmarks often encompassing figures into his compositions. Barrett utilizes a heavy impasto and his palette bears similarities to that of Fern Coppedge and George Sotter. Barrett’s paintings are always found in unique and somewhat charming handmade frames designed by the artist and finished in metal leaf.
A living contemporary of the no longer living “New Hope School” impressionist painters, Joseph Barrett resides outside of New Hope above his old-fashioned antique shop and studio. Entering Barrett’s shop is like taking a step back in time. Inside this cluttered and dusty haven of treasures from the past, is a studio spanning only four by eight feet. This little studio, containing cans of old brushes and hundreds of used paint tubes...
