About the Item
Robin Cole's (US based) "Beneath the Sky" is an original, handmade charcoal painting that depicts a grey monochrome pattern of a fish with reflected clouds.
Nature and those that inhabit it—our human selves included—possess a magic for me, one which I attempt to elicit by working within the bounds of realism as one might work within a poetic form, utilizing the formal constraints to evoke something beyond the boundary of those very limitations. I strive to carve out a compelling space in which those peripheral presences can stand forth, a space of co-existence with both the seen and the unseen. This idea of continuity and reciprocity between landscape and psyche is reflected in many of our myths, legends, and stories both ancient and modern. I am drawn to these primal sources and archetypes of our human stories—stories which, at a fundamental level, are nearly always developed in direct response to our wild, earthly home as a way of explaining, understanding, and relating to its elemental forces.
In the past, the immediate, intimate, intuitive quality of drawing media held my exclusive attention and loyalty. More recently, I have found my subject matter crying out for a versatility that would allow me to dip into the archetypal, the illusionistic, the seductively lit or hauntingly atmospheric that offers as much presence to the light and air as it does to the landscape, the object, or the human face. Though the devoted naturalist in me is always present in my work, my images now come as often from within as without, informed as significantly by emotional texture as observation. My objectives with this work center primarily around both living and cultivating an experience of conscious observation of the outer world, imaginative perception of the inner world, and a longed-for instinctive understanding of both.

Robin Cole
Robin Cole, born in Denver, Colorado in 1985, is a painter, draftswoman, and encaustic artist working in the tradition of realism. Though related to the familiar genres of landscape painting and portraiture, her work explores a slightly unusual, more nuanced and closely experienced relationship with nature that is at once otherworldly and scientific. Cole received her BA in English at Colorado College as a Boettcher Foundation scholar before making a shift in her studies and career to pursue fine art. She later completed the post-baccalaureate program in Studio Art at the Burren College of Art in County Clare, Ireland, and went on to earn a Master’s of Fine Art in Drawing from the Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) in 2013. These pursuits were supported and informed by a variety of artist residencies including the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, and Spiro Arts. Following completion of her MFA, Cole stayed on for five years as faculty at LCAD, where she was able to utilize both her literary and artistic backgrounds to teach a variety of undergraduate drawing and graduate writing courses. In 2018, Cole received a second artist grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation in support of her current work, as a follow-up to her initial grant in 2012 for her unique encaustic drawings. In spring of the same year, Cole returned to Colorado Springs, where she now lives and works.

"Fusion, " Charcoal on Paper, 2022
By Bruno Surdo
Located in Chicago, IL
Chicago-based fine art painter Bruno A. Surdo is classically trained in drawing and oil painting in the tradition of Renaissance masters. With strong command of the human form, Surdo creates dynamic compositions of people and places that communicate a rich commentary on the world around him. Depicting trees from personal encounters, Surdo’s latest body of work entitled “Tree Spirits” takes us on a foray into the forest, where leaves, branches and burls express something deeply personal. Applying his mastery of figurative realism to the natural world, he experiments with form and texture to uncover the intangible spirits of trees.
This charcoal drawing entitled “Fusion” beautifully illustrates the collision of two young birch trees. Loosely drawn with short, lateral strokes, the drawing depicts the slow process of two trees fusing together as a graceful gesture of physical touch. The horizontal motion of the sketch-like linework captures the striated texture of birch bark, punctuated by the irregular forms of its eye-shaped markings. The light-colored trees are contrasted by a dark backdrop, a void of negative that isolates the trees in space and time.
Restricting the composition to only a portion of the tree trunks, Surdo accentuates their abstract forms and focuses on the simple beauty of their graceful movements. Guided by his memory, Surdo recalls the trees as soft, gentle and calm, leaning in on each other in a tender embrace. His freeform, expressive style reveals the subjectivity of this memory and finishes the composition with a transient, dream-like atmosphere.
