About the Item

At his teacher Robert Henri’s suggestion, Kent traveled to Monhegan Island, describing it as a “primordial universe”—a rugged, ancient landscape far removed from civilization. This elemental setting sparked his mythic vision, carried into later works in Newfoundland and Alaska, and inspired artists like Edward Hopper and George Bellows to follow. Kent’s signature painting style involved paring down the details of his landscapes even while rendering the scenes realistically. Bathed in light, his clean and expansive visual style was well suited for his favorite subject matter: the natural beauty found in snow-filled northern climates.
