About the Item
This superb marine oil painting is by noted Austrian artist Roland Strasser. Strasser was born in Vienna, studied art in Germany, spent time in Indonesia and finally settled in America. This painting was painted circa 1920 when Strasser went to Indonesia. The location is the Sunda Kelapa port area of Batavia (Jakarta) and shows two Bugis wooden pinisi sailing ships alongside a wharf lined with colonial Dutch warehouses. Sunda Kelapa continues today to be a vibrant port, handling inter-island trade primarily between Jakarta, Sulawesi and Kalimantan. Bugis pinisi, which are made by hand from iron wood, a type of wood that is soft and pliable when wet but dries into a hard, durable wood, are still used for this trade. The bugis sailors originate from southern Sulawesi in the Indonesian archipelago. They still use ancient methods of navigation to ply these shipping routes which are centuries old. The vivid greens and reflections in the water are lovely and the ornate frame finishes the painting off beautifully.
Signed lower right.
Provenance. Michael Backman Ltd London Gallery.
Condition. Oil on panel, 16 inches by 20 inches. Good clean condition.

Roland Strasser(1885-1974) was born in Vienna, Austria and studied art in Munich, Germany. Early on he received a commission in Holland and from here first became aware of Indonesian art and culture. He decided to travel to Indonesia in 1920. In Bali he met the painter Willem Dooijewaard with whom he worked and travelled. He migrated to the USA in 1952 where he worked until his death. Strasser's works are represented in the collection amassed by President Sukarno. This scene, possibly of the Sunda Kelapa port area of Batavia (Jakarta) shows two Bugis wooden pinisi sailing ships alongside a wharf lined with colonial Dutch warehouses.
