About the Item

Wonderful little oil on board by Pennsylvania artist Roy Blankenship, Sunrise in Vermont 1971. 3" x 3.75", monogram lower right, signed, titled, dated on reverse. Born in 1943 in Philadelphia, Roy Blankenship is an American Impressionist whose career seamlessly bridges the worlds of creative artistry and scientific preservation. His artistic development was deeply influenced by a childhood spent in households filled with Hudson River School landscapes painted by his great-grandfather, Albert Babb Insley. This early exposure to romantic realism and marine subjects laid the foundation for his lifelong focus on the natural beauty of the Chesapeake Bay, the Brandywine River, and the New England coast. Blankenship's formal education includes a degree from the University of Delaware and graduate studies at the Tyler School of Art. Despite this training, he identifies as a self-taught painter, continually experimenting with techniques to achieve a "peaceful timelessness" in his work. A pivotal milestone in his development was his transition into professional art conservation, having trained at Winterthur Museum. He credits his work as a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation with significantly increasing his technical confidence and understanding of materials. His artistic achievements span decades and diverse media. In 1966, he received honors as a combat artist for graphite drawings created in DaNang, Vietnam. Later accolades include an Award of Excellence for ceramic sculpture from the Delaware Art Museum and prestigious oil painting awards from the North Shore Arts Association. Today, Blankenship actively exhibits with his wife, Lois Showalter Blankenship, and remains a respected authority on 19th-century American art.
