Sally Michel Avery (1902 - 2003): An American born modernist painter who was studied at the Art Student's League in New York. During the summer of 1924 she was working in East Gloucester, where she met and fell in love with her future husband and fellow artist, Milton Avery. For the next 40 years, the were colleagues, critics and companions. Most of the time was spent focusing on Milton's career, but Sally was completing illustrations in her free time for the New York Times, children's books and other publication. After Milton passed away in in 1965 Sally was able to focus on her work which was growing increasingly popular, for her bold colors and acute approach with texture. It was much richer than her husbands work which were a bit Olympian. Sally Michel Avery's works continue to be highly collected as well as praised by critics and collectors alike as they are exhibited in such museums as: The Metropolitan Museum, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Corcoran Gallery.
