Samuel Alken Junior (1784–1825)
Samuel Alken Junior lived a short life, but one filled with artistic precision and quiet promise. Born in early 19th-century England, he followed in the footsteps of his father, Samuel Alken Senior, and became part of the rich tradition of sporting and equestrian painting that defined the era.
Little is widely known about Alken Junior’s life, but his surviving works speak clearly of his talent. His paintings often depict racehorses, hunting scenes, and animals in motion—subjects that demanded both anatomical accuracy and a deep understanding of their spirited nature. Alken Junior’s ability to convey the strength and elegance of horses placed him among a respected group of early sporting artists, bridging the stylistic gap between Georgian formality and the more romantic sensibilities that followed.
Working in an age when British society was fascinated by the aristocratic rituals of the hunt and the thrill of the turf, Alken Junior’s paintings offered both celebration and study. Though his name was later overshadowed by better-known contemporaries, his art reflects a skilled hand and a trained eye—one attuned to the dynamic relationship between man, beast, and landscape.
His death in 1825, at just 41 years old, cut short a career that might have flourished further. But in the delicate tension of a poised horse or the rhythm of a cantering stride, Samuel Alken Junior left behind a legacy of movement frozen in time—a quiet testament to a gifted but too-brief life in paint.

John Frederick Herring Sr. was born on September 12, 1795, in London, England. He was the son of a London-based fringe maker, and the family lived in modest circumstances. Although little is known about his early education, Herring showed a natural affinity for art and horses from a young age. His father moved the family to Doncaster when Herring was still a boy, a town famous for horse racing, which would play a significant role in shaping his future career.
