About the Item

Fine landscape painting from the 1800s with name plate of Samuel Bough, (1822-1878), featuring the artist's skill creating movement, of wind in the trees, golden tips catching the sun. The mountains catch the light, and the overall composition is of a sweeping view from the lake, waterfall and stream up the hill with sheep. Bough was born in England but devoted his life to painting in Scotland, dying in Edinburgh in 1878. This scene of mountains, golden light and sheep grazing on a hillside with watching figures by the water's edge is both idyllic and naturalistic. Unsigned, the painting is not attributed to a specific artist. There is light craquelure and signs of appropriate age in the canvas and the work to be a 19th century artwork. The figures appear to be a shepherdess with three children, in a style reminiscent of Bough, Shayer and other 19th century artists. The treatment of light on the central tree and background foliage elevates the golden moment of late afternoon sun. Realistic with expressive color and sense of movement, the artist beautifully captures the late afternoon natural light. Sam Bough was a master painter whose work is represented in fine art galleries and art museums, including the Scottish National Gallery. The nameplate includes RSA, Royal Scottish Academy, where Bough was welcomed as a member and regularly exhibited. Bough was a popular painter in his lifetime, and a leading figure in Scottish maritime and landscape art. This landscape is an oil on canvas, in a newer frame with linen inner lining that is in very good condition. The name plate has been attached over the linen of the frame. This painting measures 27.5" by 33" in the frame and sight size of 20" by 26.5". There is some craquelure visible in the sky and one small paint fleck Saltire Gallerie will retouch. The painting is of a good size, in good condition by a highly skilled artist of the time. Ready to hang!

Country Cottage
By Abraham Hulk the Younger
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), and George Vincent (1796-1832). These artists painted in the Dutch style, though both are British. Each has had experience with Dutch masters that influence their work. George Vincent’s work is perhaps even closer to this than Hulk’s. Vincent paints the trees and skies with the warm hues of light infused on the work. Here, the sky has blue but also a khaki or tan shade, roughed into the blue and white. It is an unusual color in skies, yet Vincent shows us the light through clouds castingva darker shade. The trees are varied greens but also yellowed leaves, as in autumn. Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...
