About the Item

The second-generation Hudson River School painter Sanford Robinson Gifford built a reputation as a master of light and atmosphere, developing a highly distinctive body of work of enchanting and mesmerizing effect. A significant part of his extant oeuvre consists of small-scale studies such as The Riverside which portrays a sense of closure and comfort induced by the oval format and reinforced by the framing, drooping tree—a Gifford hallmark. His work is held in museum collections such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian American Art Museum plus many regional, academic, and smaller institutions.
