Phantom Petales is a unique painting by Japanese contemporary artist Shoko Okumura. This painting is made with pigments and silver leaf on Japanese paper mounted on wood panel, dimensions are 80 × 80 cm (31.5 × 31.5 in).
The artwork is signed, sold framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The painting depicts a dreamlike water surface, where soft violet hues dissolve into one another and delicate white petals drift gently across.
In the series Wandering Seasons, Shoko Okumura reflects on the silent rhythm of time and its passage through nature’s cycles. Inspired by the Japanese concept of mono no aware—the awareness of impermanence tinged with a quiet melancholy—her works evoke the fragile beauty of moments that cannot be held. Rather than freezing nature, the paintings capture its fluid essence, offering a contemplative space where viewers witness time’s passage suspended between nostalgia and wonder.
Okumura’s practice bridges the human and the natural. Drawing on Shinto beliefs that regard nature as sacred and animated by unseen forces, she infuses natural elements with vitality through delicate compositions illuminated by gold and silver leaf. Her art celebrates nature as living and in constant motion, where each detail carries meaning. By crystallizing fleeting moments within ever-changing landscapes, she turns painting into a meditation on time, transience, and renewal.
Born in Tokyo in 1983, Okumura blends Japanese and Italian traditions. Trained in traditional Japanese painting and fresco restoration in Florence, she has developed a distinctive technique combining Japanese paper, gold leaf, and pigments from both cultures. Based between Milan and Tokyo, she has exhibited across Europe and Japan since 2010, extending her practice into fields such as fashion and jewellery.
