Early 20th-Century Antique English Autumn/fall river landscape.
Sidney Pike was a prolific landscape and genre artist exhibiting between 1880-1907, London based originally he seems to have lived around the south coast and eventually retired to the Lincolnshire coast where this work was painted. He exhibited 22 works at the Royal Academy which is a substantial amount, he also exhibited at The Royal Academy of British Artist and the Royal Society of Painters in Oils.
This is a very good example of the artist's work. He has painted a difficult subject, the Autumn season. Many painters shied away from this type of composition as the colors and balance of painting such scenes are much more difficult than the Summer or Winter.
This is an oil on artist's board and is signed lower left.
The reason I bought the painting was I thought it captured the subject very well. With the artist's use of subtle color and strong confident brush strokes, he has achieved a very desirable painting.
This is a perfect painting for a hallway, den, study, bedroom, family room, and entrance.
