About the Item

“Gathering Poppies,” set beneath a brooding sky, is a delightful landscape by the Glasgow-born artist Sir David Murray. The work is signed, dated, and carries a Christie’s Auction House stencil on the reverse. Painted in the later years of his career while he was based in London, it likely depicts a Suffolk countryside scene. Sir David Murray was a prominent Scottish landscape painter known for his atmospheric, romantic depictions of the British countryside. Active during the late Victorian and early modern periods, he became one of the most respected artists of his generation and held influential positions within major artistic institutions. Early Life and Education David Murray was born on 29 January 1849 in Glasgow, Scotland. He received a traditional education before entering business life, working for several years in a Glasgow merchant’s office. His interest in art, however, grew steadily, and he began taking evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art, where his natural talent quickly became evident. Artistic Career Murray devoted himself fully to painting in the early 1870s. He first exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1875 and rapidly became associated with the rising cohort of Glasgow-based landscape painters. In 1881, he moved to London to be closer to the core of the British art world. There he became a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, showing dramatic, poetic landscapes characterised by: • Luminous skies • Expansive moors and pastures • Cattle and pastoral motifs • Rich, atmospheric color. Honors and Positions Murray’s standing rose steadily: • Associate of the Royal Academy (A.R.A.) – 1891 • Royal Academician (R.A.) – 1905 • Knighted – 1918, for services to art • Keeper of the Royal Academy – 1921–1926, overseeing the teaching and management of the Academy Schools He became one of the most influential figures in British academic art, respected for both his creative work and his leadership in arts education. Artistic Style and Legacy Murray specialized in naturalistic yet romantic landscapes, often inspired by the Scottish Highlands, English pastures, and the changing seasons. His works combined meticulous observation with emotional interpretation, placing him within the tradition of late-Victorian and Edwardian landscape art. His paintings are held in numerous public collections, including the Tate Britain, Royal Academy, and several major Scottish museums. Condition: Oil on canvas. The varnish has yellowed and good lighting is required to fully appreciate. Size: 35cm x 53cm (54cm x 72cm framed) 14 x 21 inches (21 x 28 inches framed)

Circle of Fred MORGAN (1847-1927) c1890
Located in Holywell, GB
Circle of Fred MORGAN (1847-1927) c1890 A sensitively painted portrait, possibly a study for a larger work, of a young country girl. Indistinctly signed ** Morgan, possibly Fred. Unfortunately Fred signed in a number of different ways depending on the grandeur of his work. However, a consistent element was the colour, a reddish brown similar to the colour of the signature on this painting. I can offer no provenance with this painting, so I am selling at as circle of Morgan rather than actually by him. “Frederick Morgan ROI was an English painter of portraits, animals, domestic and country scenes. He became known for his idyllic genre scenes of childhood. Morgan was born in London to John Morgan and his wife, Henrietta Hester Clare. His father was a successful genre artist sometimes known as 'Jury Morgan' (after one of his paintings The Gentlemen of the Jury). At the age of 14, he was taken out of school by his father who then tutored him in art. At the age of 16, while still studying with his father, his first picture, The Rehearsal, was exhibited at the Royal Academy, and, after a hiatus of several years, his paintings were shown there regularly. For a while he worked as a portrait artist for an Aylesbury photographer; this training proved to be crucial as it "taught him how to observe closely and to give the greatest attention to detail." Eventually he turned to other subjects for his art, in particular idyllic genre scenes of country life and childhood. For many years, starting in 1874, Thomas Agnew & Sons' purchased all the work he produced. Although an excellent portrait artist, Morgan had problems in depicting pets and barnyard animals - he enlisted the aid of either Arthur John Elsley...
