About the Item
River Bridge with Figures in English Countryside by 20th Century British Artist, Spencer Coleman. Unique Vintage Original, Oil on Canvas, Signed.
Art measures 12 x 16 inches
Frame measures 16 x 20 inches
This serene original oil painting by celebrated British landscape artist Spencer Coleman captures the soft, pastoral beauty of the English countryside. A gently flowing river reflects the muted sky, while a stone bridge - blanketed in moss and ivy - creates a lyrical focal point. Figures pause along the bridge and riverbank, bringing a quiet human presence to the otherwise timeless rural scene.
Coleman’s mastery lies in his ability to convey atmosphere with subtle tonal shifts, delicate brushwork, and a palette of mellow greens, blues, and earthen hues. His landscapes evoke stillness and nostalgia, recalling the unspoiled charm of the British countryside.
Born in 1952, Coleman is widely regarded as one of the foremost contemporary exponents of British landscape painting. He is especially known for his figurative and river scenes, which blend realism with a soft, romantic sensibility. His works are prized for their gentle mood, technical refinement, and strong sense of place.
Presented in an ornate gilt frame that complements the painting’s classic aesthetic, this is a unique vintage original ideal for collectors of British landscape art, traditional interiors, or curated country-house décor.
Spencer Coleman (b. 1952) is widely considered to be one of the leading exponents of British landscape painting today. He specialises in figurative and landscape work, concentrating on realistic depictions of rivers and streams in the English countryside. These images depict gentle, timeless subjects with beautiful scenery and mellow colours.
