Stanislas Lépine was a French painter best known for his beautiful and serene views of the Seine and other landscapes views. He is also credited as being a forerunner of Impressionism A native of Normandy, Lépine began his artistic training as soon as he was able to afford to purchase paints and brushes. Like every aspiring artist, Lépine began by making copies from masterpieces hanging in the Louvre. As a young man in Paris, Lepine was exposed to many contemporaries, many of whom he would remain close friends with throughout their lives. During this early period, many of Lepine’s works featured aquatic scenes, such as rivers, estuaries, ports, and beaches, and as a Norman, water would go on to be a favorite subject for Lépine. His professional career began when he met Jean-Baptiste Corot, a pivotal landscapist, in 1859, the same year he first exhibited in the Paris Salon. It was from Corot that Lépine acquired a strong love of nature, which permeated and thrived throughout Lépine’s artistic career. Artistically, Lépine remained close to Paris. Due to this permanence, his subject matter also did not vary. His landscapes have been divided into three different categories: works dedicated to scenes in Normandy, works dedicated to the beauty of the countryside directly surrounding Paris, and finally, works dedicated to the city streets of Paris and Montmartre. Similar to his consistent subject matter, Lépine’s artistic style did not see much evolution during his lifetime. Lépine mostly painted in his studio based on the drawings and studies he made en plein air. His color palette tended to favor the subtle shades of rose, yellow, ochre, green, and blues that one finds in nature. Lépine’s soft colors are strongly juxtaposed against his thick brushstrokes and impasto painting. His works are saturated with a tranquility and delicacy that emphasize the beauty and energy in his landscapes. As an individual, Lépine enjoyed a quiet and modest life. Unlike his contemporaries, Lépine did not frequent artistic circles and salons, preferring instead to dedicate his day’s hours to his art form. Regardless of this, he did still have very close friendships with certain artists who kept him connected to the evolving art world of Paris. His friendships went on to include Alfred Sisley and Edouard Manet, the latter of which painted a portrait of Lépine’s wife. Despite being a regular exhibitor at the Salon of Paris, Lépine did not enjoy financial stability. Unfortunately for him, he had a hard time selling his works to the artistic circles of Paris. Interestingly enough, when he submitted a set of his works to a public art auction in 1875, his works individually reached higher prices than works by Renoir, Monet, Sisley, and Morisot, when their art came to auction a week later. Lépine exhibited only 37 works of art at the Paris Salons during his lifetime, and, as a secluded individual, it took him 25 years after his first exhibition at the Salon to even begin to receive his due recognition. His first honorable mention at the Salon was in 1884 for his work Le Pont des Arts. Unfortunately, this achievement was diminished due to the fact that 54 other artists received a similar honor. The year 1874 saw a very big achievement for Lépine, when he exhibited in the first Impressionist exhibition in Paris, alongside Monet, Cezanne, Pissarro, Degas, and Renoir. Following this exhibition, two of his works were transported across the Atlantic in 1886 where they were displayed in a New York City exhibition, specifically, Le Pont Saint-Michel and Clair de Lune a Paris. Lépine finally received the official recognition he deserved in 1889 upon the receipt of two medals; a first class medal for Le Pont de l’Estacade a Paris, and Le Pont Royal, and a third class medal for Le Marche aux Pommes. These honors were the last Lepine would enjoy before his death in 1892 at the age of 57 from an unknown cause that left him completely paralyzed. Today, his works can be enjoyed and admired in prestigious museums across the world, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and the National Gallery in London.
