Forbes Mill, Los Gatos - Historic Landscape in Acrylic on Masonite
Idyllic California watermill landscape by Stella Leis (American, b. 1922). This autumn-themed painting depicts Forbes Mill in Los Gatos, California. The multi-story mill sits at the end of a curved road, framed by trees with orange and yellow foliage. The massive water wheel has a splash of bright blue water flowing over it, adding movement and vibrancy to the composition.
Signed and titled "Stella D. Leis Forbes Mill" on verso.

Stella Leis (American b. 1922) was born in Arizona, but spent the majority of her life in California, in San Bernardino, San Jose, Los Gatos, and Carmel. Leis began her art studies at UCLA, and then completed them in Italy and France. She was the director of the Tacoma Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery. She later taught art at the Saratoga Art Gallery. In the mid 1970s, she owned and operated The Country Store Antiques and Art Gallery in San Jose with her husband, Raymond.
