Stéphane Fauchille, dream anthropologist
“Would you, for a moment, like to become the Claude Lévi-Strauss of the aborigines of an Australia unknown to maps? Then enter into the phantasmagorical painting of Stéphane Fauchille, an ethnologist of the unknown, a learned anthropologist of distant civilizations, undoubtedly lost somewhere in the cosmos, which can only touch the imagination of lovers of science fiction (SF, the initials of Stéphane Fauchille). Tattoed or feathered, these surprising natives are nonetheless holders of unusual instruments, evoking enigmatic technology. These apparent savages are seemingly more evolved than us. Mysterious boxes, convoluted mechanisms whose functioning eludes us, a prehistory endowed with futuristic comfort… One thinks of the far-fetched inventions in Raymond Roussel’s ‘Impressions of Africa’.
The surrounding nature, a fantastical jungle softly colored, sometimes evokes in its inventiveness the “Savage Planet”, a masterpiece of animation by Topor. Stéphane Fauchille, a draftsman (drawing is fundamental in his eyes), mentally clears his mind and allows himself to drift freely into an uncontrolled dreamlike state, a kind of automatic drawing generating a bizarre universe, arising like oil in a desert from a mysterious and inexhaustible unconscious. The drawings accumulate in a database, filled with random discoveries. When he shifts to painting, often on large formats, he then feels the need for an organized, structured composition, carefully developed, requiring several preparatory drawings.
Whether inspired by ancient engravings or reports found in Paris Match or National Geographic, strange, eccentric, and unexpected subjects engage his imagination: alien typology (the little greys and others), Beatles (surrounded by rabbits and cans of peas), conquistadors reduced to the status of wicked dwarfs, Michelin man bristling with arrows, underwater vespa, and of course everything that resembles the primitive arts of a Quai Branly fallen from the Milky Way. Painting, which mocks the label of anecdotal and loves to tell strange stories (not the least of its functions, even if it is certainly not the only one), has acquired high nobility, from Hieronymus Bosch to Salvador Dali. With the perfect precision of a very advanced technique, Stéphane Fauchille loves to tell stories, preferably improbable ones, crazy stories told with the deadpan seriousness of a scholarly anthropologist.”

Stéphane Fauchille
Stéphane Fauchille was born in 1966 in Amiens, France.
He is a painter, sculptor, illustrator. 1987: CIP School of Fine Arts of Tourcoing.
1991: Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Paris I Sorbonne. His work is close to the spirit of Singular Arts. Figurative painter and storyteller, he draws inspiration from medieval fables, science fiction, ethnology, and comics to create fantastical universes in imaginary environments. Stéphane Fauchille or the inventive magic of the world’s images “In the assumed ignorance of mental limits and in the stunning invention of his graphic findings, the creative effervescence is the constant artistic territory of Stéphane Fauchille. Fluid and sensitive, his refined chromatic palette oxygenates the expanse. Vibrant, his generous, whimsical, incandescent, ironic, and jubilant art first springs from a universally recognized cultural reference point, such as, for example, a brave Egyptian deity, a friendly Michelin man, a historically astounded Raft, or, often favored, the naive, familiar, and magical figure of the respected indigenous individual, a central emblem of the happy, scattered constellation of each of his paintings. From this, this high-life dreamer invents wildly, and in a surprising path full of surprises, he endlessly pushes the boundaries of the imaginary. Hence the extraordinary impact of his vital passion for images, as he embraces the diversity of icons inspired by the world. Stéphane Fauchille‘s art is without mental handcuffs, without ideological crutches, and without religious straitjackets. Art of sharing and momentum, funny and soothing, and of an inventive and travelling suppleness. There is never any aggressiveness in his enjoyable and libertarian scores. A fabulous digger, always in total creative freedom, he playfully experiments in the scattered meanders of our lived history. His open and plural figuration interrupts the peaceful course of the expected, and dazzlingly ranshackles the tired sclerosis of surfaces. But Stéphane Fauchille, a fine watchman of humanity, controls wonderfully, and keeps deep down the sense of true exchange, and that of the tenuous wonders to be seen and to be seen. With him, there is no dominant centre, and the eye everywhere wanders. And each living work is born of an active and masterful fairy tale.”

Oil on canvas

Bilson was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. At the age of five he moved to London, England, speaking Icelandic rather more fluently than English. He realised that nobody was listening and started to paint. His unique talent was first noticed a year later, when, at the age of six, he won an international Exhibition of Children’s Art competition in Prague, Czechoslovakia. At the age of nineteen he became a full-time professional: self-taught, self-propelled and completely self-supported. He has painted ever since.
Bilson has lived in various countries including Australia, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, Ireland and now resides happily in Iceland. There continues to be a great deal of travelling and painting on the move, as well as continuing to exhibit worldwide.
Many of Bilson’s paintings are owned by well-known people and corporations, such as Bob Hawke – former Prime Minister of Australia, Jonathon Sachs – The Chief Rabbi, Clint Eastwood, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Anne Robinson, The Von Thyssen Collection, The Romanov Collection, Westinghouse, Ashland Oil and Arrowfield Horse Stud...
