The viewer is placed at eye level with the canal, immersed in a sun-drenched morning where the water reflects the calm elegance of Venetian life. A floating market barge, laden with vibrant produce, stretches across the foreground, anchoring the scene with colour and vitality. Behind it, a tapestry of ochre, coral, and terracotta façades line the canal in perfect perspective, their windows opening to a day just beginning.
Whitehead’s treatment of light is exceptional, highlighting every architectural detail while casting long, atmospheric shadows across the street and water. The glint of sun on rippling water, the haze of distant pedestrians, and the soft reflections invite you to pause and breathe in the moment. The composition, while precise, retains a lyrical flow, making the painting feel both timeless and present.

Artist Biography:
Born in Coventry in 1960, Steve Whitehead is an accomplished British painter known for his distinctive approach to magic realism and hyper-realism. He studied Fine Art at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth under the guidance of David Tinker, completing his MA in the mid-1980s before continuing his academic pursuits at the Courtauld Institute of Art. His long career in Fine Art education culminated in his leadership of the MA Painting course at the University of Hull’s Scarborough campus. He continues to teach Painting and Art History part-time.
Since 1985, Steve has exhibited widely across England, Wales, and Scotland, and has shown regularly in London galleries since 1997. His work has earned significant recognition: he is a two-time first-prize winner of the Wales Open Art Exhibition and has been awarded prizes at the Manchester Academy and the Hunting Art Prize exhibitions. His paintings are held in notable collections including the Contemporary Art Society of Wales, Accenture, Prudential, Skye Pharma, and the Bank of Scotland.
Steve describes his work using the terms magic realism and hyper-realism. His paintings are characterised by a unique blend of empathy, strong compositional design, and meticulous detail, resulting in atmospheric and often subtly surreal imagery. His subject matter is now primarily focused on the landscapes of North Yorkshire—its moors, wolds, and coastline—where he lives. His style draws inspiration from 19th-century Neo-Classical and Romantic painting, as well as 20th-century British and American Realists.
Steve’s artistic process involves an immersive study of his chosen landscape: photographing, sketching, and revisiting locations at various times of day and under shifting weather conditions. He often constructs compositions from rearranged or composite elements of these explorations. Watercolour studies may precede the final work, which is developed on canvas through an initial drawing and underpainting that is gradually refined over weeks or months.
