About the Item
Sydney Laurence is recognized as the foremost painter of Alaska, having settled there before any other accomplished American artist. Especially captivated by the Northern Lights, he returned to the subject throughout his career, and several related works are now held in museum collections. Laurence studied painting with Edward Moran and at the Art Students League, exhibited at the National Academy of Design and the Paris Salon, and belonged to both the Royal Society of British Artists and the Salmagundi Club.
