Magic Realist Surrealist Latin American Naive Fantasy Painting

Magic realist fantasy painting in the manner of Ernst Fuchs and Arik Brauer. Naïve art is any form of visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes (in anatomy, art history, technique, perspective, ways of seeing). Unlike folk art, naïve art does not necessarily evince a distinct cultural context or tradition. Naïve art is recognized, and often imitated, for its childlike simplicity and frankness. Paintings of this kind typically have a flat rendering style with a rudimentary expression of perspective. One particularly influential painter of "naïve art" was Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), a French Post-Impressionist who was discovered by Pablo Picasso. Naïve art is often seen as outsider art that is by someone without formal (or little) training or degree. While this was true before the twentieth century, there are now academies for naïve art. Naïve art is now a fully recognized art genre, represented in art galleries worldwide. Museums devoted to naïve art now exist in Kecskemét, Hungary; Riga, Latvia; Jaen, Spain; Rio de Janeiro, Brasil; Vicq France and Paris. "Primitive art" is another term often applied to art by those without formal training, but is historically more often applied to work from certain cultures that have been judged socially or technologically "primitive" by Western academia, such as Native American, sub saharan African or Pacific Island art (see Tribal art). This is distinguished from the self-conscious, "primitive" inspired movement primitivism. Another term related to (but not completely synonymous with) naïve art is folk art. There also exist the terms "naïvism" and "primitivism" which are usually applied to professional painters working in the style of naïve art (like Paul Gauguin, Mikhail Larionov, Paul Klee). At all events, naive art can be regarded as having occupied an "official" position in the annals of twentieth-century art since - at the very latest - the publication of the Der Blaue Reiter, an almanac in 1912. Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, who brought out the almanac, presented 6 reproductions of paintings by le Douanier' Rousseau (Henri Rousseau), comparing them with other pictorial examples. However, most experts agree that the year that naive art was "discovered" was 1885, when the painter Paul Signac became aware of the talents of Henri Rousseau and set about organizing exhibitions of his work in a number of prestigious galleries. The Earth Group (Grupa Zemlja) were Croatian artists, architects and intellectuals active in Zagreb from 1929 to 1935. The group included the painters Krsto Hegedušić, Edo Kovačević, Omer Mujadžić, Kamilo Ružička, Ivan Tabaković, and Oton Postružnik, the sculptors Antun Augustinčić, Frano Kršinić, and the architect Drago Ibler. A term applied to Yugoslav (Croatian) naive painters working in or around the village of Hlebine, near the Hungarian border, from about 1930. Some of the best known naive artists are Dragan Gaži, Ivan Generalić, Josip Generalić, Krsto Hegedušić, Mijo Kovačić, Ivan Lacković-Croata, Franjo Mraz, Ivan Večenaj and Mirko Virius. Expressively capturing the mystique of the famed Incan ruins, this 1983 exprerssionist painting by Marius Sznajderman, titled Machu Picchu Courtyard, showcases his signature blend of bold color and dynamic brushwork. The composition features a stylized interpretation of Machu Picchu's verdant landscape and ancient stone structures, rendered in an abstracted yet recognizable form. Sznajderman's use of undulating greens, deep blues, and earthy tones imbues the work with an almost dreamlike quality, emphasizing the spiritual and historical significance of the site. Marius Sznajderman was a French-born American painter, printmaker, and scenic designer. Born in Paris in 1926 to Polish-Jewish parents, he fled Nazi-occupied France in 1942, eventually settling in Caracas, Venezuela. There, he studied at the School of Fine Arts and co-founded the Taller Libre de Arte, an influential experimental art workshop. In 1949, he immigrated to the United States, earning both Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Columbia University. Over his extensive career, Sznajderman explored themes ranging from Latin American culture to Jewish heritage, with his works held in numerous public collections, including the Smithsonian Institution and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He settled in Hackensack, New Jersey, where he lived and had a studio for more than 50 years before moving to Amherst, Massachusetts in 2015. His work, which includes painting, prints and collages, as well as set designs, is in more than 45 museum and public institution collections in the United States, Latin America and Israel. He held more than 40 solo exhibitions at galleries and museums and participated in more than 75 group shows around the globe. Gustavo Novoa, Born 1941 in Santiago, Chile, He attended the Academy of Fine Arts. Novoa made his debut as an artist in the early 1960¹s selling oil paintings,watercolors and crayon drawings on the streets of Paris, principally Montmartre. His first one-man show was sponsored by the Chilean Ambassador at the Maison de L¹Amerique Latin in 1961. The late Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain sponsored his second show in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1962. Showing in galleries in the Faubourg St. Honore and the Salon de la Jeune Peinture. Novoa constructed a dream-like Naive new jungle where the lion lies down with the zebra. Panthers and pandas share the shade with African monkeys and American raccoons. Novoa became represented exclusively by the Wally Findlay Galleries in the early 1970s, and his one-man shows in New York, Paris, Palm Beach and Beverly Hills established him as a champion of ecology and wildlife preservation along with Henri Maik. His animals were primitive and painted in lush and colorful Folk Art backgrounds. Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey commissioned him to do the poster and program for the circus that year. By 1971, Novoa¹s paintings had changed again. His show "The Grand Tour" sent his animals prowling the major cities of the world, from the Spanish Steps in Rome to the Left Bank in Paris, through the Great Pyramids and back to Park Avenue in New York. It was perhaps the most surrealistic of Novoa¹s shows. On April 3, 1988, Prince Charles of England set a new record for Novoa¹s sales by auctioning one of his paintings at a benefit sale in Palm Beach.Novoa was received at the White House by Mrs. George Bush. Miami¹s Art Deco District had chosen Novoa¹s painting "The Carlyle Hotel" to be presented to the First Lady. The painting hangs in the President¹s Library. The prestigious Gallery 1-2-3 of El Salvador introduced Novoa at their Latin American Biennale exhibition in June of 1992. The Instituto Cultural de Santiago presented an impressive one-man show in August, 1992. His first exhibition in Chile, where the press named him "Painter of a Lost Paradise". Sponsored by Avensa Airlines of Venezuela, Novoa opened his first one-man show in Caracas, with great success, at the Galeria Oscar Ascanio in June of 1993. Working from his own photography, shot during the early hours of the day, Yangchareon’s acrylic and oil paintings are largely devoid of human figures, but deeply imbued with their past presence. Recently, the artist has broadened his focus to include imagery of the city at night––rendering glistening rain-soaked sidewalks bathed in the artificial light of street lamps and movie marquees against an inky black sky. Yet, Yangchareon’s motivation remains the same; to find the hidden beauty in varying industrial landscapes and seeing splendor where most would argue it does not exist. Reminiscent of Edward Hopper, a sense of melancholy pervades his compositions in a quiet, detached manner. The influence of Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud can also be detected in the artist’s sense of color and in his interpretation of light.
