About the Item
Original oil on canvas painting by the Spanish artist, Teofilo Gelan Ulla. Circa 1970. A series of cottages in an impressionistic landscape. Signed by the artist lower left. Condition is very good. The painting is housed in a period mahogany frame in a walnut stain in good condition. Overall framed measurements are 8.25 by 10.5 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota, Florida estate.
Teófilo Galán Ulla was born in Madrid in 1935. Like his father, he first of all studied to become a teacher, but after few semesters he transferred to the academy of arts in Madrid. He subsequently moved on to Barcelona, Munich and Stockholm. After his studies in art, he went back to Spain in search of the tranquillity he needed to paint and found it at last on Tenerife in 1961.
This Island offered calm, light, a constantly changing atmosphere and a climate which allowed him to paint outdoors. Here his study was the shade of a palm or a treed. Away from the bustle of the city and the tourist centres he found people who had retained their tranquil lifestyle unchanged for fifty or hundred years. They provided him with the motifs whichcan be seen in all his works, but the main theme of his paintings is always calm and light.
All works of the artist testify remarkable skill and extraordinary high artistic quality. At the same time, they manifest a dedication to beauty that has become rare today but it´s gaining nowdays more popularity with the current trend towards nostalgia. T.G.U. approaches his motifs with extraordinary meticulousness of detail. Even after he has found his subject and made his first studies or already put brush to canvas for a new painting, it only needs the atmosphere or light to change and he will stop, pack away his easel and leave. He has been known to return five or six times to the same motif and all in vain because the situation was no longer the same as when he began.
The impressionist Galán Ulla has his own subtile way of awakening in us a feeling for the beauty of southern landscapes and the people who live there through his style of painting and his choice of motifs. His impressionistic works, whether oil paintings, watercolours or graphic works always capture a fleeting impression as he has seen and experienced it personally. The evening sky is often dark brown with no trace of blue or red. This atmosphere makes the human subjects the central element of his work. He rarely paints details because the person’s movements are more important.
Tenerife is the largest and most populous island in Spain's Canary Islands, known for its diverse volcanic landscapes, including Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak, and its mild climate, making it a popular tourist destination with a mix of natural beauty, beaches, and cultural sites like the historic city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Its capital and largest city is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a major port with a blend of traditional and modern architecture

H. A. Dyer
1872 - 1943 Historical Rhode Island artist Hezekiah Anthony Dyer, son of Elisha and Nancy Anthony Dyer , was born into a prominent Rhode Island family, having both his grandfather and father serve as governor of the state. A descendent of the Hoppin family, known for their own artistic inclination, Dyer inherited both an interest in the arts as well as his father’s interest in public affairs. He fulfilled his destiny by becoming a notable figure in Rhode Island politics and public service as well as an accomplished artist.
Dyer attended boarding school at St. Paul’s Church in Concord, New Hampshire and then went on to attend Brown University. Following his graduation from Brown in 1894, Dyer became serious about pursuing an art career and made the decision to travel abroad to Holland, Italy and France where he focused on refining his watercolor technique. Following his initial trip to Europe, Dyer returned to Providence and attended classes at the Rhode Island School of Design. By 1919 he received an Honorary Masters of Arts Degree from Brown University.
Throughout his life, Dyer traveled to Europe for several months of each year to paint. He had a particular affinity for European seascapes and landscapes, as well as for picturesque scenes of old European villages. Dyer’s travels took him throughout the continent including Belgium, Brittany, Normandy, England and both the Swiss and Italian Alpine regions. Hezekiah was heavily influenced by the English School of painting, and in the early years of his career as a painter, worked exclusively in a deliberately realistic style. During this time, Dyer also began showcasing his paintings in exhibits that consisted of only his own work and which were very successful. As his painting progressed, Dyer allowed himself to experiment more in the field of watercolor. He developed a technique of painting on grey or tan paper and would paint everything lighter than the paper using an opaque gouache, and everything darker than the paper in transparent washes of color. This technique allowed Dyer to represent a great deal of detail not usually found in watercolor paintings. It also resulted in wonderfully vibrant colors that would not fade when dry.
H. A. Dyer was a prominent member of both the art community and of Rhode Island public life. While he never held an office, Dyer became very involved in politics and from 1916 to 1919 was president of the Republican Club of Rhode Island. At the beginning of the First World War, Hezekiah was made chairman of the speaker’s bureau for the Food Administration of Rhode Island, and was later made chairman of the speaker’s bureau for the Council of Defense. Dyer also became a chairman for a philanthropic organization called Rhode Island of the Fatherless Children of France. In 1922, France presented both Hezekiah Dyer...
