About the Item
1931 Bay Area Post-Impressionist Landscape "Woodside Road" by Timothy Miton Wulff
Painted in 1931, Woodside Road by San Francisco artist Timothy Wulff (American 1890-1960) exemplifies Bay Area post-impressionism. A winding country road leads the eye through stands of cypress and eucalyptus, dissolving into the blue atmospheric distance of the coastal foothills. Wulff’s lively brushwork and heightened palette animate the scene with a sense of plein-air immediacy, while the compressed perspective and rhythmic tree forms lend the composition an expressive structure. Created during his early career in San Francisco, the work reflects the regional synthesis of French modernist training and Bay Area painterly traditions that shaped California art in the interwar period.

Timothy Milton Wulff (1890–1960) was an American painter associated with the San Francisco Bay Area’s early 20th-century Bohemian art scene. Born in San Francisco on October 13, 1890, Wulff received his first formal training at the California School of Fine Arts (later the San Francisco Art Institute), where he studied under muralist and portrait painter Frank Van Sloun. Seeking further academic grounding, he traveled to France and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1922 to 1925, a traditional atelier environment that shaped his early approach to drawing and composition.
After returning to San Francisco in the mid-1920s, Wulff worked primarily as a portraitist, while also producing landscapes of Northern California’s foothills, coastal ranges, and rural roads. His painting reflects a post-impressionist sensibility common to Bay Area artists of the interwar period—combining direct observation with expressive brushwork, heightened color, and compressed spatial structures. During the 1930s he maintained a studio in the historic Montgomery Block—known informally as the “Monkey Block”—a significant hub for writers, painters such as Diego Rivera, architects, and bohemians that served as a cultural nucleus for the city prior to its demolition in 1959. Wulff exhibited regularly with the San Francisco Art Association, participating in shows in 1916, 1924, 1925, and later years.
Beyond his studio practice, Wulff contributed to the city’s artistic infrastructure. In 1941 he helped organize one of San Francisco’s earliest open-air art shows, supporting broader public engagement with regional art during a period when commercial galleries remained relatively limited. His circle represented a transitional generation in Bay Area art—trained in academic techniques but increasingly receptive to modernist developments and the emergence of a distinctly West Coast pictorial language.
Wulff continued to paint and remain active within the Bay Area art community until his death in San Francisco on September 24, 1960. Though his work has not been widely circulated in national markets, it remains a representative example of California’s interwar modern landscape tradition and the cultural milieu of San Francisco prior to World War II.
