NOTES: Artist in oil, watercolour and pastel in the spontaneous, English tradition. He studied at Bournville College of Art, 1956–9, Birmingham College of Art, 1959–61, and Royal Academy Schools, 1961–4, his teachers including Peter Greenham. Won several prizes and scholarships during his studies and many after. As well as showing widely in mixed shows in London and the provinces, Coates was past-president of RBA and PS and a member of NEAC, RP and RWS. His one-man shows included a number at New Grafton Gallery. Coates carried out a series of prestigious commissions, including one for the RWS in 1990 to paint the ceremonial procession celebrating HRH The Queen Mother’s ninetieth birthday. Wrote Creating a Self-Portrait, 1990. In the winter of 2000 was the commissioned artist with the England cricket team touring South Africa.
He shared an exhibition with Donald Hamilton Fraser at W H Patterson in 2003, having a solo show at Archeus Fine Art in 2004. Lived in Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hampshire.

DETAIL: Painter and teacher, born in London. After Bryanston School he studied at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art with James Bateman and Clive Gardiner, 1937–9, then at the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting, 1939–40, with Ernest Jackson, and drawing at La Grande Chaumière, Paris. During World War II he served in Royal Engineers before transferring to the Camouflage Unit, which included Frederick Gore, Oliver Messel, Roland Penrose and Claude Rogers. Roddon spent part of the war stationed in the Old Assembly Rooms, Norwich, as a camouflage instructor alongside Messel and Penrose. From 1948–50, he taught at Goldsmiths’; from 1960–1 was commissioned to paint The Stations of the Cross and Resurrrection for St Thomas More, Patcham; from 1960–3 moved to Paris; rented Edwin John’s studio in Tite Street for 10 years; and began a series of portraits, sitters including the novelist L P Hartley, composer John Ireland...
