Painted in gouache, watercolour and ink on canvas, this large 19th- century maritime scene depicts a Dutch galleon under full sail upon a restless sea. The composition draws inspiration from 17th century naval painting, recalling the works of Willem van de Velde and other masters who celebrated the Netherlands’ maritime ascendancy. The artist combines meticulous draughtsmanship with a sensitivity to light and atmosphere: the ship’s rigging and sails are delineated with accuracy, while soft washes of grey and umber evoke shifting skies and the shimmer of wind-tossed waves.
