About the Item
The Montelbaanstoren, a historic tower in Amsterdam, stands prominently overlooking the Oudeschans canal. The tower was built around 1517 to defend the harbour from potential attack, and was later embellished with its decorative top, wooden spire, octagonal base, and clock in 1606 once it was no longer needed for defensive purposes. Indistinctly signed to the lower left. Well presented in an ornate gilt-effect frame. On canvas on stretchers. Image size: 48.5 x 69cm.
