About the Item

Alpine Landscape of the 19th Century, Traveller on a Mountain Path – ink drawing, ca. 1840 Brown ink and India ink on brown paper, with white heightening. Dimensions with frame: 58 × 71 cm Mountain landscape depicting a steep path running alongside a torrent, animated by the discreet figure of a traveller riding a mule. The composition unfolds in depth through rocky masses, trees and alpine reliefs, with a distant chain of snow-capped mountains, broad and monumental in scale, articulated through white heightening. Executed on brown paper in brown ink and India ink with white highlights, the work belongs to the tradition of Romantic landscape painting of the mid-19th century, in which the human figure, deliberately reduced in scale, is absorbed into the vastness of nature. The contrast between the traveller and the monumental presence of the mountains conveys a contemplative vision of the landscape, where man appears as a transient element confronted with the permanence and grandeur of the natural world. The rigorous spatial construction, the almost monochrome treatment and the controlled use of tonal values attest to a fine quality of execution and a mature approach to landscape drawing. Unsigned, presented without glass. Preserved in a simple and elegant gilt wood frame from the first half of the 19th century. The drawing is protected on the reverse by a backing board. Minor age-related imperfections are visible along the edges of the sheet, without affecting the overall reading of the work. Very good condition of the drawing.

Summerly Mountain Landscape with Hiker on Hiking Trail, 19th Century
Located in Berghuelen, DE
Summerly Mountain Landscape with Hiker on Hiking Trail, 19th century. An antique oil painting depicting a hiker on an alpine hiking trail and a bridge over a mountrain stream. Painted on canvas with pastell colors. Framed with antique decorative gilded frame. Painted in the area of Tyrol or South Germany, late 19th century. A high quality antique oil painting which will highlight your alpine cabin wall decoration. Frame with minor defects. The Biedermeier period runs parallel to the Romantic period and both are characterized by similar features. Domesticity, closeness to nature, folksiness and need for harmony are buzzwords of this time. The focus is on the simple, the conservative and the tried and tested. There is little experimentation and more observation and enjoyment. The art style is kept very realistic and shows great similarity to photography. Domestic idyllic representations, beautiful landscape and impressive portraits are the most popular topics for oil paintings...
