About the Item

Fine 19th century tondo oil on canvas, attributed to master equine painter John F. Herring Senior (1795-1865). The painting depicts a groom on horseback exercising a small group of horses. In the background, several figures can be seen conversing at the front of a coaching inn, most probably the groom's place of work. The painting has been beautifully presented in an antique gilt effect frame with wooden tondo mat. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

    Previously restored, the painting has a relined canvas and several areas of surface retouching. The antique frame shows wear, with cracks to the tondo mat, minor corner damage, and small chips and losses to the outer profile.
