Attributed to Marc Baets, this exquisite Flemish School painting depicts an idyllic landscape with peasants conversing beside a fortified building.
During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Flemish painting experienced a revival of traditional landscape styles. Drawing inspiration from Jan Brueghel the Elder, younger generations of Flemish artists created charming pastoral scenes populated with vibrantly dressed peasants. These works were characterised by a sense of bucolic contentment and joie de vivre, featuring small, meticulously rendered figures engaged in anecdotal moments against serene landscapes and architectural elements.
This example is beautifully presented in an antique 19th-century frame adorned with shell and acanthus leaf ornamentation. Unsigned. On panel. Image size: 19.5 x 30.5cm.
