Catching the Breeze Oil on canvas - 2020 Framed size 590 mm x 690 mm wood frame finished in white – depth 48 mm Shipping included as a gallery offer. Sailing ships were a vital part of the growth of East Anglia, during the 17th 18th Centuries goods were shipped to and from London, bricks and timber for urban development, materials and foodstuff were the main cargos. The Thames Estuary flows into the North Sea and the land drains off the flat Eastern landscape that exaggerates the tides’, and the waters turn colder as we head northward into deep water fishing. This constant movement of man and shipping by wind and water has become a way of life to much of this stretch of the English coast. Strict control of fishing and shipping along with a softer way of life, has allowed for more pleasure yachts and sailing for fun. It is this sense of fun that emanates from ‘Catching the Breeze’ – surging ahead, leading the way, racing for home – the lead yacht leaves behind the rain clouds and dark skies, she’s ‘Caught the Breeze’ and the sailors spirits are lifted. Painted with multiple layers of oil paint on 12 oz. canvas using French Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Raw Umber, Naples Yellow and Raw Sienna with Titanium White, applied with the palette knife. About the Artist John Parker BA (Hons) Fine Art - DTLLS Born in London in 1957, John grew up in Essex and developed an interest in art during his teenage years. Taking advice and encouragement from local Leigh-on-Sea artists Vic Ellis and Colin Moore, John slowly found that he could exhibit successfully and so painting became more than just a hobby. In time, painting became a semi profession and in 1990 he made a leap of faith into painting full time a became a professional artist. Beginning with traditional landscape and seascape paintings he moved into wildlife and still life subjects, always chasing the 'old masters' technique and style. In 2002 John searched his first formal 'Art Education' enrolling in the Norwich School of Art at B-Tech level, looking to explore modern art. The following year he enrolled for a further three years graduating with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art in 2006. His time studying more formally changed the way he thought about the way he wanted to paint. Enjoying the wonderful; experience of having all of the facilities at hand to explore and experiment in his spare time. Two years later he completed a post graduate diploma in teaching at City College in Norwich and so qualified as a lecturer in Fine Art History and Appreciation, delivering lectures at Further Education and Higher Education level. He now continues to run popular classes from his Suffolk Studio. To accompany recent works John reflects with the following statement: "The journey of life is not an easy one. It follows neither a smooth nor direct route, but rather, takes many twists and turns, obstacles are many and setbacks commonplace. Consequently, our character and our personalities are built through our ability to persevere, our persistence and our determination to achieve. As a parallel, the work on display reflects the journey of life, behind the façade is the story of such a journey. Each of my paintings has a unique history, they have their own stories to tell, each one has successfully overcome difficulties and conquered adversity and like us, they are what they are as a result of that individual journey. They have developed individuality, strength and a dynamic character. Therein lays their beauty, the ability to endure, to resolve, to protect and defend and this is done gladly. They are resonate with the love and passion with which they were created".
