Coastal Countryside Scene with Horse-Drawn Cart - Antique Original Oil Painting
Early 20th century oil painting of a countryside scene, potentially the British Isles. In the foreground, a man sits on a horse-drawn cart as he travels up a sandy road. To his sides, the small hills are covered in green and brown vegetation. The road runs towards the ocean and passes a small cottage with a thatched roof. There are low-hanging clouds above the ocean, creating a wall of white before thinning out and showing the blue of the sky. The brushstrokes are subtle but expressive.
Frame size: 14" H x 18" W
Canvas size: 11 1/8" H x 15 1/8" W
Canvas is monogrammed with "FJ" or potentially "FJP" in bottom right corner. The painting has been previously re-stretched, thus the monogram is now located on the edge of the stretcher bars. The monogram is covered when the piece is placed in its frame (see photos.)

Hudson River School was an informal association was America's first so-called school of painting and the dominant landscape style until the Civil War. The name derives from a group of 19th-century landscape painters working in New York state. With realistic composition, they depicted romantic views of unsettled areas of the Hudson River Valley especially lakes, rocky gorges, and forests in the Catskill Mountains. About a fourth of these artists utilized luminism or effects with special lighting techniques to convey lofty emotions through contrasts of light and dark.
