About the Item
Dutch school of the 18th century Oil on wood panel 33 x 22 cm (39 x 28 cm with the frame) Signed lower center with the monogram "JR" Good condition (some thinness on the left of the picture)
There is a composition engraved by Jean Jacques de Boissieu in 1772 and given to Jacob van Ruisdael at the time. Prints of this work can be seen for instance at the British Museum or the Metropolitan Museum in New York. This animated landscape is very much in the Dutch tradition of the 17th century. The beautiful colors of the sky, the trees, the bull and the small houses drawn in a naturalistic way. And the background is beautiful with subtle but sketched details (hills, houses, trees, figures and animals). This is also characteristic.

Our painting is very close to the art of Jacob van Strij studied and may have been painted in the circle of this artist. Jacob van Strij studied at the Academy of Painting in Antwerp and with Andreas Lens. Back in Dordrecht, he became a landscape painter. Both individually and with his brother Abraham, he painted various wallpapers for clients in Dordrecht. According to Jacob van Strij biographer Johannes Immerzeel, “His passion and concern for faithfully imitating nature went so far that Van Strij, as ill as he was (for years Van Strij was plagued with gout) he asked someone to pull his sled along the ice in the biting cold in order to make sketches for his paintings, which he then executed in his workshop ”. French painter, lithographer and illustrator, Théophile Clément Blanchard is part of of those painters of the romantic era who represented picturesque views of France like Alexis Daligé de Fontenay or Eugène Cicéri. These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old !
