WAAGEN German Romantic Landscape Tegern Lake Montains Bavaria Mid 19th
Located in PARIS, FR
Adalbert Waagen Munich, 1834 – Bertesgaden, 1898 On the shores of Lake Tegern in Southern Bavaria Oil on panel Signed and dated lower left "A. Waagen. 1857" Located on the reverse "Gegend am Tegern See" 25 x 40 cm (39 x 53 cm with frame) Very good condition Beautiful 19th-century carved and gilded wood frame Adalbert Waagen was a German landscape painter. He painted primarily landscapes, and more specifically mountain landscapes. His style was influenced by his teacher, Zimmermann, through Joseph Anton Koch. Leopold, Prince Regent of Bavaria, bestowed upon him the honorary title of Royal Professor in 1891. His works are held in the Martin von Wagner Museum, the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg, and the Munich City Museum. Waagen first studied with Albert Zimmermann in Munich between 1855 and 1858. Our painting, dated "1857," dates from this period. After completing his studies in 1860, Waagen established his studio in Munich, in the home of his friend Karl Millner. He regularly undertook study trips with Hermann Krüger and other students to the mountains of Old Bavaria and Tyrol. Our painting, in fact, is set in southern Bavaria, "near Lake Tergen." Waagen's style became broader and more realistic at this time, both in its atmosphere and its use of color. Waagen became a central figure in the vibrant artistic circle of "Young Munich," alongside Otto Stöger, Theodor Pixis, Georg Kremplsetzer, August Spieß, Friedrich and Heinrich Lossow...

“View of Switzerland”
By John William Casilear
Located in Southampton, NY
Beautiful oil on fiberboard painting of a view of Switzerland done by the American artist, John William Casilear. Signed with monogram lower left. Condition is excellent. Circa 1857/1858. The painting is housed in a contemporary frame. Overall framed measurements are 6 5/8 by 8 5/8 inches. lProvenance: Long Island, New York collector. Biography John William Casilear was born in New York City on June 25, 1811. Like his fellow Hudson River School landscapists Asher B. Durand and John F. Kensett, he worked as an engraver before turning to painting. In 1826 Casilear was apprenticed to the engraver Peter Maverick (1780-1831), and at first he primarily executed bank notes. Durand encouraged him to attempt other subjects, however, and during the 1830s he madeengravings after some of the most prominent paintings of the day, including Daniel Huntington's The Sybil (New-York Historical Society). In 1832 he began submitting engravings to the National Academy of Design exhibition and he first showed paintings there in 1836. In 1833 Casilear was elected an Associate of the Academy; he was elevated to full Academician status in 1851. In 1840 Casilear accompanied Durand, Kensett, and another painter, Thomas P. Rossiter (1818-1871), on a trip to Europe. There the artists studied and copied paintings...
