About the Item
Mythological-themed painting (unframed 35 x 27.5 cm) depicting the episode of Diana and Actaeon from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
The goddess is depicted sitting in discreet attire, the bow-her attribute-and the dogs, future perpetrators of the torment, sitting next to her. Actaeon, represented as a boy with blond hair, turns toward her. Note the horrified look on both of their faces. It is unclear who the elderly figure nearby may be, probably a fellow hunter.
On stylistic grounds it can be attributed to the Emilian school of the late 18th century, mindful of Parmigianino's experience in Fontanellato and Correggio's experience in the Abbess's room.
