About the Item
Baroque capriccio with architectural ruins and figures, an early 18th century Italian painting showing an imaginary landscape with Roman ruins and figures, an early Italian oil-on-canvas painting, unsigned, but inspired to the style of Genoese painter Alessandro Magnasco the Lissandrino 1667-1749, in good used condition.
Capriccio is a term coined in the late Renaissance and has several meanings with a common point. Caprice was a movement of the soul, or more precisely a excitation of the imaginative faculty that gave rise to every variety of mental images. Pictorially, there is no doubt that the Capriccio genre developed in the Eternal City during the first decades of the 17th century and found inspiration in the ruins of the classical age.
The canvas essentially has the ruin as its subject, as the landscape in the background in the distance is of secondary importance in the composition. The unidentified ruins here have an evocative matrix, that is, they exploit their emotional potential to delineate imaginary landscapes. The scene is symbolically observed by a Roman horseman placed in the center of the composition, bystander beside a white horse, who is confronted by two sitting beggars on a cluster of ruins, on rubble, as if to underscore the decadence of the classical world.
The painting was lined and returned to a new frame; it was restored around 2010 and has some pictorial additions. The frame is French, nineteenth-century gilded wood and tablet that measures 125 cm by 142 cm.
The dimensions of the canvas alone are 90 cm high by 113 cm wide.
It comes from a private collection in Lombardy
