About the Item

A postcard-pretty window into the tropics more than 50 years ago, on offer is an original oil painting in the style of the "Florida Highwaymen" artists. It depicts a tropical river or marsh landscape at sunset. As such, it shares the elements of lush vegetation, prominent palm trees, water reflections and a vibrant sky that characterize paintings by the Florida Highwaymen. This was a group of 26 African American landscape artists who produced large quantities of scenic Florida paintings from the 1950s onwards, selling them out of the trunks of their parked cars along US Hwy 1. Signature: The attractive but faint signature in the bottom left appears to begin with "Tabang...", but is illegible.

Highwaymen Style
Located in San Francisco, CA
Fabulous large Florida painting very much in the style of the highwaymen. I believe this is done by a Jensen Beach Florida artist name, Elaine Defenthaler. She passed away in 2013 and was obviously a very talented artist. The painting is an oil on board measuring 36 inches wide by 24 inches high. The frame measures 43 1/2 inches wide by 31 1/2 inches high. She did drip some paint in the upper left area, but it does not take away from this Beautiful painting. It is getting harder and harder to afford highwaymen paintings

He studied in New York City with the Hudson River school painter Jasper Cropsey and received criticism from another Hudson River school painter, Frederic Edwin Church. Like many who worked in the Hudson River school style, Bush also sought to inspire viewers with an expansive view of nature that dwarfed the relative influence and position of man.
