About the Item
Extraordinary oil painting on panel from an exquisite French collection. It retains its original gilded wooden frame. The scene depicts a powerful and chromatic seascape, representing a naval battle with meticulous detail. The composition features two main galleons. The one on the left has its cannons still smoking, while the one on the opposite side is wrecked and ablaze. In the foreground, shipwrecked sailors are aboard a small frigate. The technique is meticulous, the brushwork very fine, and the composition balanced. The composition is in keeping with the painting's narrative. The patina is consistent with its age.
