About the Item
Oil on Canvas. French school of the 2nd half of the 18th century.
Probably the work of a follower of Claude Joseph Vernet (1714 -1789), a French painter who specialized in seascapes and who several times produced views of storms and shipwrecks.
The scene is set on a rocky coast, near a village erected on the cliff above; a strong storm is in progress, discharging lightning, thunderbolting from the top right, over some frightened figures of wayfarers, and directed toward the sailing ship sailing in the strong waves.
The sky is laden with black clouds, although in the distance already a glimpse of blue seems to be beginning to open up.
Restored and re-tinted, the painting is presented in a styled frame.
