About the Item
A flight of fancy, this work is a bit of a surprise for a 20th-century California painter. With its colorful dhows topped by lateen sails and attended by turbaned sailors, the artist Anthony Muscat expresses a colorful European romanticism more likely found in a 19th-century work depicting the ruins at Luxor or a veiled denizen of a harem. Perhaps starting life and his artistic career in Malta might explain it. Muscat ultimately found his milieu as a California plein air painter in the Bay Area.
