About the Item

A late 19th century or early 1900´s seascape with waves, beach and sailing ships. This finely executed seascape depicts big blue-green waves breaking against a sandy shoreline, rendered with a sensitive handling of light and movement. A small group of seabirds flies low over the water, searching for fish, animating the foreground with a sense of natural rhythm. Along the horizon, two sailing ships pass across the horizon in the distance, adding depth and a quiet narrative element to the composition. Above the somewhat windy sea a blue sky with some clouds. The painting is indistinctly signed and executed in oil on cardboard panel. Stylistically and technically, it is likely to date from the late nineteenth century or around 1900. The reverse bears a printed label from Reeves Sons, Limited, London, England, a well-established manufacturer of artists’ materials since the eighteenth century. The specific form of the company name on the label indicates a production date after 1890. Although the artist has not been identified, the work displays a confident and accomplished hand. The overall quality, combined with the materials used, suggests that the painter may have been English. This attractive marine painting exemplifies the period’s enduring interest in coastal scenery and maritime life, conveyed with both restraint and elegance.
