About the Item
This is an authentic Japanese woodblock print of Utagawa Hiroshige's "View of Tsukuda Island from Eitai Bridge" (Eitaibashi Tsukudajima). It is the print No. 4 from his famous series, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei).
The composition is notable for its bold framing, using a large wooden pillar of the Eitai Bridge on the left and the oar and prow of a boat on the right to draw the viewer's eye into the scene. The scene depicts boats and fishing for whitebait on the Sumida River at night, a common activity during the Edo period. This is one of the few prints in the series where Hiroshige attempted to portray a starlit sky, adding to its unique atmosphere.
The original series was created in the mid-19th century, with the artist launching the project in 1856 as his final masterpiece.
Tsukudajima from Eitai Bridge is a iconic view of Tsukudajima or Tsukuda Island, boldly framed by a wooden pillar of the Eitai Bridge at left and the oar and prow of a boat at right.
Viewers can see the boats are anchored for the night, and red flames glow in the baskets of the fishermen who just setting out to sea.
The moon glows and stars twinkle in the dark night sky given an attractive visual highlight with details of bokashi shading in the water and sky. A total triumph of Hiroshige's artistry.

1856, Hiroshige launched his last master project, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo Series, his final masterpiece of a stunning group of 118 vertical woodblock prints. Filled with scenes from spring cherry blossoms, summer fireworks to riversides and festivals landscapes which capture the essence of life of Edo.
Hiroshige’s genius shines through in bold compositions, which is evident in the framing of Kinryuzan Temple through the Thunder Gate and this print here on offer, View of Tsukuda Island from Eitai Bridge. This timeless series demonstrates Hiroshige’s wonderful creativity.
About the Publisher: Yamada Shoin
In 1965, Tokyo publisher Yamada Shoin issued a high-quality reprint series of 60 selected designs from Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." Highlights include "Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake," "Fukagawa Susaki and Jūmantsubo," "Horikiri Iris Garden," and "Plum Estate, Kameido."
This series was hand made and printed by artisan carvers used new blocks in traditional Edo-period style and printed them with vibrant colours and subtle bokashi shading, faithfully recreating Hiroshige's originals.
While reprints of Hiroshige's "Tokaido" series are common, fine reproductions of "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" are rare. This series offers an excellent chance to acquire high-quality examples.

About the Artist:
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)
In Japanese woodblock printing, Hiroshige ranks as one of the greatest masters of the medium. His romantic and moody evocations of nature capture a distant time and place that still holds a fascination for viewers today. Hiroshige was a prolific artist, designing an estimated 4,500 prints, mainly landscapes.
He was born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1797, the son of a fireman. After his parents died, Hiroshige began studying the art of woodblock printing with Toyohiro in 1810 or 1811. His earliest prints were primarily book illustrations, and it wasn't until the 1830s that Hiroshige began to find success with the genres for which he would become best known: landscapes and kacho-e (bird and flower prints).
Hiroshige's breakthrough came with the publication of The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road in 1833-1834. Hiroshige captures moody and atmospheric weather conditions, rendering mist, rain, snow, and evening effects with great skill and beauty. His poetic landscapes have a distinctly human touch with addition of figures that lend a human element to balance the beauty and wonder of nature.
The popularity of his Tokaido Road prints led Hiroshige to design nearly twenty different versions of the series during his lifetime. He also created many other acclaimed landscape series, including the Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido Road, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, Famous Views of the Eastern Capital, Famous Views of the Sixty-odd Provinces, and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, his late masterwork.

Utagawa Hiroshige
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal-format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō and for his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. The subjects of his work were atypical of the ukiyo-e genre, whose typical focus was on beautiful women, popular actors, and other scenes of the urban pleasure districts of Japan's Edo period (1603–1868). The popular series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by Hokusai was a strong influence on Hiroshige's choice of subject, though Hiroshige's approach was more poetic and ambient than Hokusai's bolder, more formal prints. Subtle use of color was essential in Hiroshige's prints, often printed with multiple impressions in the same area and with extensive use of bokashi (color gradation), both of which were rather labor-intensive techniques. For scholars and collectors, Hiroshige's death marked the beginning of a rapid decline in the ukiyo-e genre, especially in the face of the westernization that followed the Meiji Restoration of 1868. Hiroshige's work came to have a marked influence on Western painting towards the close of the 19th century as a part of the trend in Japonism. Western artists, such as Manet and Monet, collected and closely studied Hiroshige's compositions. Vincent van Gogh even went so far as to paint copies of two of Hiroshige's prints from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.

This rare image depicts the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1597 to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. The engraving, with later hand-coloring, shows the cabin and ship of the Dutch arctic expedition of Barentsz on Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla), with the party being attacked (and in some cases apparently eaten) by bears and wolves. Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz, reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya in 1594, and in a subsequent expedition of 1596 rounded the northern point and wintered on the northeast coast. Barentsz died during the expedition, and may have been buried on the northern island.
This artwork is a page from a book by 17th century cartographer and engineer, Allain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706), "Description de L'Univers, contenant les differents systêmes du monde, les cartes générals et particulières de la géographie ancienne et modern." Paris: Denys Thierry, 1683.
