About the Item

A substantial and atmospheric winter landscape showing a view of fields and farm buildings draped in snow. Signed with initials lower right, 'V.G.K.' for Victor Georg Kuhnel, (Danish, 1889-1971) and dated 1942; old Charlottenborg exhibition label verso. Kuhnel first studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Aksel Hou before joining Harold Giersing's painting school. He frequently traveled abroad to further his studies, including to Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Austria and also to Northern Italy (1913-14). Kuhnel was a three-time recipient of the August Schiøtt Scholarship (1941, 1948, 1952) as well as the 1963 Wolf scholarship. He was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards and exhibited widely and with success including for many years, at the Charlottenborg Museum and at the Den Frie. His work is held in private and public collections including the permanent collection of the Haderslav Museum. Reference: Weilbach, Dansk Kunstnerleksikon; et al.
