Vincent Courdouan from Toulon is of the Provençal school. He is known for his landscapes of the Var hinterland and the coast. His works are in many museums in the south of France (Arles, Draguignan, Flers, Montpellier, Narbonne, Nice, Nîmes, Toulon). His painting is characterized by a naturalism, a real sense of details of nature, along with a science of classical compositions with a bright light that comes certainly from his years of training in Paris with the academic painter from Toulon Jean-Baptiste Paulin Guérin.
Our painting undoubtedly represents a landscape from the surroundings of Toulon that Courdouan represented so often. Perhaps towards the Gien peninsula with these characteristic little cliffs that we see near small beaches in small coves surrounded by vegetation and where it was pleasant for people to walk.
And this painting is very similar in style to several paintings by Vincent Courdouan in particular The Valley of El Biar (Toulon Museum of Fine Arts), Saint Tropez in the Var (Auckland Art Gallery), View of the Coast and View of the Surroundings of Toulon (art market)).

Very nice 19th century gilded wooden frame
French painter, lithographer and illustrator, Théophile Clément Blanchard is part of of those painters of the romantic era who represented picturesque views of France like Alexis Daligé de Fontenay or Eugène Cicéri. These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old ! We still know of him, in particular, a view of Bugey (dated 1846) which is at the Louvre Museum and a “Delicious Landscape” (from the 1840s) at the Salies museum at Bagnères de Bigorre...
