About the Item
Squint Texas Hill Country Sunrise 8" x 10 " oil Landscape Impressionism
The Texas Hill Country is a distinctive geographic and cultural region in Central Texas, known for its rugged limestone and granite hills, numerous spring-fed rivers, and a blend of American and German heritage. It is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, wine tasting, and exploring charming small towns.
V....Vaughan is known for impressionist paintings of wildlife, western themes, scenes in Italy, France and all things Texas .
Her paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Gadsen Alabama Museum of Art, the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art (in NE) and the Great Plains Art Museum at the University of Nebraska, as well as in countless private collections. She is a dedicated blogger and teacher of art! Since 2021, she has conducted yearly workshops at a castle in France, where artists get to live and enjoy art making and life in a 12th century castle all to themselves.
A lifelong Texan, Vaughan has lived her lifetime in the Austin area of Central Texas. As a child, she exhibited a love of making art and played the role of the creative one among the seven children in her family. She began a graphic arts career at 16, first designing for the businesses owned by her siblings but eventually rising to creative director at several Austin area agencies. “My big family always conveyed to me that my art was a God-given talent,” she says. “Somehow that made me feel that it was something I was supposed to do. This gave me permission to pursue it.”
Vaughan attended college on athletic scholarship, though she filled her schedule with art classes and subsequently secured an internship at an advertising agency. That introduction to the corporate world set her off in a new direction—she left school to parlay the summer job into a full-time position. She continued to work as a commercial artist for several years, winning prestigious ADDY Awards and working on high-profile accounts including Samsung, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, RockSports and Harcourt Publishing. Marriage and children prompted her move into free-lance agency work, illustration, design and personal projects. Her most notable efforts have included “Big Fun Maps”, RockSports T-Shirt lines of sports designs, and as a fine art painter, and instructor. Her renowned solo exhibit, "Last Year on the Farm” traveled the USA in 2010 and received national exposure.
“I paint because it’s the best way I know to communicate, study, and SHARE the many wonders of creation”.
Her paintings are part of the permanent collection of the Gadsen Museum of Art, the Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art and the Great Plains Art Museum as well as in countless private collections. Also shown are several other paintings by Virginia Vaughan available.

I paint because it’s the best way I know to communicate, study, and observe creative work that’s how Texas painter V…. Vaughan (the first initial stands for Virginia) describes her drive to create fine art. “It’s a calling,” she says of her life’s work, which has taken several twists and turns but has, nevertheless, led her down the path toward fulfillment. A lifelong Texan, Vaughan grew up in the Austin area and today makes her home in Round Rock, a suburb of the capital city. As a child, she exhibited a love of making art and played the role of the creative one among the seven children in her family, eventually working for several of her siblings as a sign painter and designer. Her parents forever encouraged her to appreciate and mine her passion, instilling in her that it was not simply a passing fancy, but an innate gift. “It was always conveyed to me that this was a God-given talent,” she says. Somehow that made me feel like it was something I was supposed to do. It gave me permission to pursue it. Vaughan attended college on an athletic scholarship, though she filled her schedule with art classes and subsequently secured an internship at an advertising agency. That introduction to the corporate world set her off in a new direction—she left school to parlay the summer job into a full-time position. She continued to work as a commercial artist for many years after that, winning several prestigious ADDY Awards and working on high-profile accounts for Samsung, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, and Harcourt Publishing, among others.

Sunset, San Antonio, 20x16, oil on panel Texas
This painting by Garrett Middaugh shows the beauty of a Texas Sunset outside of San Antonio. A group of low hills are in the background which surround San Antonio. San Antonio is a major city in south-central Texas with a rich colonial heritage. The Alamo, an 18th-century Spanish mission preserved as a museum, marks an infamous 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico. Following the San Antonio River, the miles-long River Walk is a landmark pedestrian promenade lined with cafes and shops. HemisFair Park’s 750-ft. Tower of the Americas overlooks the city.
The artist is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. and to the Rocky Mountains The artist is in corporate and private collections around the world.
Garrett Middaugh is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. His palette is muted, stark, embracing the neutral colors of everyday experience. Avoiding the romantic, his landscapes are often painted at high noon or in the dead of winter. He paints in a fluid hyper realist style and feels most influenced by other landscape artists such as Neil Welliver and Rackstraw Downes. He sees landscape painting as a form of meditation, projecting outward, while solving equations and mapping the scene, realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances.
"Landscape painting is for me a means of projecting outward, of meditating, examining the here and now of place. The process often feels similar to the satisfaction of solving math equations, intuitively realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances. For the most part I paint Texas. For several years I devoted a significant amount of time to painting its forests -- the complexity of forest alleviated my sense and the nearness and density of growth was comforting. I have also ventured into west Texas and Big Bend, and occasionally have attempted to capture the mesmerizing serenity of central Texas farm and ranchland." "Summer Evening S. W. Texas"
"A Texas Painter Worked Under the Radar in New York," By Eve M. Kahn, March 6, 2014, The New York Times
Onderdonk, a San Antonio native who died of an intestinal ailment in 1922, at 40, is best known for painting swaths of Texas bluebonnets. Those canvases can bring more than $500,000 each, while his New York scenes usually end up in the five-figure range.
Onderdonk’s parents were painters in San Antonio, and in 1901, when he was a teenager, they sent him to New York for training. Through 1909, he lived in various Manhattan apartments and Staten Island houses. He then returned to Texas, but continued to spend months at a time in New York.
In 1902 he had married a Manhattan teenage neighbor, Gertrude Shipman. While she focused on raising their daughter, Adrienne, and worrying about their strained finances, “he created more than 600 works of art, often producing a painting or two a day,”
Eyewitnesses recorded his prolific pace in New York, but Onderdonk works bearing those dates rarely turn up. The puzzling gap in his productivity is explained in family correspondence that the Bakers uncovered: The artist admits that he was signing pieces with pseudonyms. He mostly used Chas. Turner and Chase Turner and occasionally resorted to Elbert H. Turner and Roberto Vasquez.
Julian Onderdonk was the son of the important Texas landscapist, Robert Onderdonk. He was the father's pupil at age 16. Sponsored by a Texas patron, he studied at the Art Students League in New York when he was 19, the pupil of Kenyon Cox, Frank DuMond, and Robert Henri. He also studied with William Merritt Chase on Long Island. In 1902, having lost his Texas patron because he married, he asked $18 for 12 paintings at a Fifth Avenue dealer in New...
